LA County Census Chalkathon

With the deadline to complete the 2020 Census quickly approaching, LACOE is concerned that 41 percent of LA County households have yet to respond and be counted. At risk is adequate federal funding for education, health and other vital programs.

As trusted messengers in their communities, districts and schools are being urged to continue to spread the word about the importance of completing the Census.

To get students and families involved, LACOE is hosting a countywide “Chalkathon” from Aug. 17 to Sept. 7. During this time, students, families and school staff are being invited to create sidewalk art promoting Census participation. All art pieces should include “” and “Everyone Counts!”. Messages in multiple languages are encouraged.

LACOE will hold a weekly raffle of Census goodies and giveaways for participating students and community members who share their artwork on social media. Professional chalk artists are also being hired to create artwork in designated locations throughout the county.

Chalk-art notes for students:

  • We ask all minors to talk with their parents before chalking on personal and public spaces and we encourage families to chalk together.
  • We know that access to public spaces (sidewalk, driveways, walls, etc.) may be limited or unsafe in some neighborhoods. We encourage students and families to be creative and consider using liquid chalk markers to create their art/message on windows, family car, or butcher paper at home.
  • All pictures or videos posted on social media should include the hashtags #LACCensusChalkathon and #CaStudentsCount. If preferred, students can provide photos of their work by email to and we will share on social media for you! Please include your grade (if student) and school or district.
  • All art pieces should include and Everyone Counts! We encourage words in multiple languages!
  • Safety is Key: Social distancing is a must and we encourage all participants to wear their masks outdoors, only chalk with members of your household and stay 6 feet away from others.

Chalkathon Partners:
LACOE is working closely with Census teams in Los Angeles County, City of Long Beach and the Puente Latino Association. Other cities, organizations and businesses are encouraged to participate. Ways to participate include:

  • Refer chalk artists
  • Offer a location for a chalk artist or recommend and help secure a location in your city/community
  • Promote the event and invite the community to participate, especially youth, by using social media, e-blasts, food-giveaways, or a caravan to hand out information and chalk.
  • Encourage members of your Census team or organization/city to participate and chalk in areas around your community. Select a day during the three-week period and we can highlight your organization or city on that date.
  • Provide giveaway prizes for the weekly raffles.
  • Chalk-it-up in conjunction with a future public event you are hosting during the three-week period
