The Field Services Division is staffed by 60% of the Department's sworn complement, and consists of the following:
- Area Command
- Traffic Bureau
- Reserve Police Officers Unit
- Canine Unit
- Community Policing Bureau including Crime Prevention
- Volunteers on Patrol
Area Command
The Alhambra Police Department works under an Area Command service delivery model. The City is divided into four distinct geographic areas (Area 1, 2, 3, and 4). Each Area is monitored by a Police Lieutenant who is held accountable for understanding the issues and concerns unique to their service area. This includes developing strategies and directing resources based on Intelligence-led policing to solve problems for our residents. The objective of this command structure is to aggressively address crime issues and improve quality of life through Community-Oriented or Problem-Oriented Policing. Visit the Area Command page for more information.
Traffic Bureau
The Traffic Bureau is responsible for providing a safe and efficient flow of traffic within the City of Alhambra. This is accomplished by providing a proactive enforcement strategy through the statistical analysis of reported accidents. The Bureau utilizes a Community Oriented Policing and multi-agency approach to vehicular and pedestrian safety, enforcement, and education.
Reserve Police Officers Unit
The Alhambra Police Department's Reserve Police Officers are a group of highly trained and motivated volunteers, who meet the State of California's Peace Officer Standards and Training. They must meet stringent standards to act as police officers.
Their responsibilities are to supplement patrol deployment, police special events, provide special services, and serve the public. They are on call for emergencies and details as needed.
K9 Unit
Under the direction of the Field Services Division Commander, the Patrol Bureau has one lieutenant serving as the Canine Unit Commander, one sergeant designated as the Canine Unit Supervisor, and two canine teams, each composed of one police officer and one canine police service dog.
The prompt and proper utilization of a trained canine team has proven to be a valuable use of a unique resource in law enforcement. When properly used, a canine team greatly enhances the degree of safety to citizens within a contained search area, enhances individual officer safety, significantly increases the likelihood of a suspect's apprehension, and dramatically reduces the time necessary to conduct the search.
Proper utilization of a canine search team also reduces the need to resort to deadly force.
Community Policing & Crime Prevention Bureau
Community Policing is both a philosophy and an organizational strategy that allows the police and community to work closely together in new ways to solve the problems of crime, illicit drugs, fear of crime, neighborhood decay, and the overall quality of life in the community.
The Community Policing Bureau operates under the supervision of a sergeant, and the section is staffed by one Crime Prevention Specialist, one Community Policing Officer, and two School Resource Officers.
The Crime Prevention Specialist participates in community activities, crime prevention fairs, and local festivals which all provide high visibility to the community. The Crime Prevention Specialist of the Alhambra Police Department is dedicated to preventing crime through ongoing education and awareness with our community partners.
The two School Resource Officers work closely with the Alhambra Unified School District, the Department's youth counselors, and detectives on issues involving the prevention of delinquency, child abuse/neglect, and domestic violence.
Community Volunteer Program
Participants in the Community Volunteer Program support the Alhambra Police Department with non-enforcement duties and tasks.
Volunteers are graduates of the Community Academy. They perform vehicle and foot patrols in business and commercial areas, City parks, and locations where specific crime problems have been identified. They serve as the "eyes and ears" of the Police Department without placing themselves in dangerous situations. Some additional duties may include:
- Front Desk Reception
- Leading Department Tours
- Records Assistance
- Safety Fairs and Community Events
- Vacation House Checks
