Chief Timothy Vu began his law enforcement career as a police officer with the San Diego Police Department. In 1994, he joined the Westminster Police Department. Chief Vu has worked in Patrol and served 8 years in the Detective Bureau in Fraud & Forgery, Robbery/Homicide, and the Special Investigations/Narcotics Unit. Chief Vu was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2006. As a Sergeant, Chief Vu served as the Crisis Negotiation Team Supervisor, was assigned to Patrol, and later supervised the Crimes Against Persons Unit.
Chief Vu was promoted to the rank of Commander in 2010. He served as the East Area Commander and was instrumental in the development and implementation of the Area Command policing model. Chief Vu was responsible for all police operations in the East Area Command, which included the business district known as Little Saigon. Chief Vu was also responsible for managing the department’s Animal Control Services, Jail, Traffic/Special Operations Bureau, and Code Enforcement. Chief Vu also served as the Detective Bureau Commander and Professional Standards Unit Commander. In 2016, Chief Vu was promoted to Deputy Chief.
Chief Timothy Vu has an MBA in Finance from the University of Redlands and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from California State University, Fullerton. He is a graduate from the Harvard Kenney School of Government and the FBI National Academy. He is also a graduate of the International Association of Chief of Police’s Leadership in Police Organization (LPO) and the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute (SLI).
Chief Vu is married to his wife Lien of 17 years, and they have two teenage daughters, Trinity and Tyler. Chief Vu enjoys hiking, taking vacations and golfing.
