Q: With all the talk about water these days, when will our Groundwater Treatment Facilities become operational?

A: According to Utilities Department staff the Groundwater Treatment Plant, which is being built to insure the continuation of Alhambra’s record of clean safe water well into future decades, should be ready to start operating in the spring of 2008 following the completion of the final stages of construction (electrical, landscaping, fencing and security).

Q: How will the Plant reduce Alhambra’s dependency on outside water sources?

A: The Groundwater Treatment Plant is designed to treat as much as 7,000 gallons of water per minute, using ion exchange and liquid phase granular activated carbon technology. The high-tech process will safely remove volatile organic compounds and nitrates from water pumped from existing (and future) wells, and provide a means to reclaim water from currently inactive wells. The main parts of the system used to treat the water are Granular Active Carbon vessels that house treatment media to remove volatile organic compounds, Ion Exchange vessels used to remove nitrates, and booster pumps that take the treated water from the Plant to the City’s distribution system, and pipelines to and from the wells.

Our thanks go out to the Alhambra community for being extremely patient during construction; we'd also like to thank our funding partners for their generous financial support of this project. They are the San Gabriel Valley Water Quality Authority (which provided a project grant) and the San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District (which provided a project grant and 0% interest load).

The end result will pay off with clean water for current and future generations of Alhambra residents. It's worth the effort!
