Spring into action during April/May by participating in one or more Utilities Department Water Awareness activities.

Spring 2008

Water Awareness Activities

The Utilities Department is gearing up for spring with several events for the public in the months of April and May.  We invite you to attend one, if not all, of our events, where we will be distributing information and free hand-outs on water conservation, all in the effort to get the word out about Water Awareness and Conservation.

These events will include:

  • Saturday, April 12 – Free Ultra Low-Flow Toilet Giveaway at Mark Keppel High School 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Sponsored by the San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District and the Cities of Alhambra and Monterey Park.  Available to all Alhambra and Monterey Park residents, with proof of residency.  Pick up a new, ultra low-flow toilet on Saturday, April 12th at Mark Keppel High School, located at 501 E. Hellman Avenue (follow the signs to the event entrance).  Toilets will be loaded into vehicles by volunteers from Mark Keppel and Alhambra High Schools athletes.  Residents are required to return their old toilets to the same location on Saturday, April 26th between the hours of 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM.  The students will receive $15.00 per each toilet returned, which will go toward their athletics program.

  • Friday, May 2 – Free information and hand-outs at Joslyn Adult Center as part of “May is Older American’s Month” Breakfast.  Seniors will each receive a “goody bag” with water saving tools and ideas.  All items in the ‘goody bag” will be generously donated by the Alhambra Utilities Department.

  • Tuesdays in May at Shorb Garden “Water Awareness Open House” – Staff will set up an information booth between the hours of 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM to distribute information to all those who stop by Shorb Garden.  These mid-day events are to encourage people in the downtown area to pick up water awareness materials, ask questions of staff, and enjoy the Shorb Garden as part of their lunch break or shopping excursions along Main Street and the surrounding area.  Begins Tuesday, May 6 through May 27th.

  • Annual Water Awareness Poster Contest – In conjunction with Water Awareness Month, the Utilities Department sponsors a poster contest for students enrolled in the Alhambra Unified School District and private schools located within Alhambra.  The contest theme is “Water Awareness Is A Family Affair .  Schools will be distributing flyers to Grades Kindergarten through 8th, beginning the week of April 14th, and all entries are due May 9, 2008 by 5:00 PM. So put your thinking caps on and get drawing!

  • Saturday, May 17, 2008 – American Cancer Society “Relay For Life 24-Hour Walk” – Utilities staff will host a booth at this event between the hours of 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM.  Look for us in the area adjacent to the Bandshell, on the south end of Alhambra Park.  Please stop by the booth to pick up information and also participate in the judging of the entries for the Annual Water Awareness Poster Contest.
