In May, six Alhambra Police Officers – Jennifer Wiese, Debbie Santana, Katie Ng, Jose Duran, Felix Huezo, and Bryon Garay – will use personal leave time to ride their bicycles 300 miles from New Jersey to the National Peace Officers Memorial and Museum in Washington, D.C. The officers are taking on this trek, called the Police Unity Tour, in honor of fallen fellow Alhambra Police Officer Ryan E. Stringer, whose name will be added to the memorial in May honoring the more than 19,000 law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty since the founding of our nation.
38° Ale House & Grill kicked off support for Alhambra's participation by donating a percentage of its earnings on January , 2012. It's not too late to support the Tour if you didn't make it to the 38° benefit event. You can still support the above-named riders, some of whom are taking up cycling just for this important cause, by logging onto the website of the Southern California Chapter of the Police Unity Tour – www.socalput.com – and click on the name(s) you wish to support.
The National Peace Officers Memorial features two curving, 304-foot-long blue-gray marble walls into which the fallen officer’s names are carved. Unlike many other memorials in Washington, D.C., this memorial is ever-changing as new names of fallen officers are added each spring in conjunction with National Police Week. And, unlike other memorials, this one is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year – at no charge.
