Did You Know?

May 15 is Police Officers Memorial Day

  • On May 15, all United States flags are to be
flown at half-staff for "Peace Officers
Memorial Day." This special tribute to law
enforcement officers killed in the line of duty
was authorized in 1994 by Congress and
    President Bill Clinton.
  • The only other regularly scheduled time flags
are to be lowered to half-staff occurs on
Memorial Day, when we remember those
    killed in our armed services.
  • There are peace officer memorial ceremonies annually in Sacramento and Washington D.C. to commemorate officers who have been killed in the line of duty.
  • There are more than 870,000 sworn law enforcement officers serving in the United States, which is the highest figure ever. About 12 percent of those are female.
  • On average, one law enforcement officer is killed somewhere in America every 53 hours. Since the first recorded law enforcement officer death in 1792, more than 19,000 law enforcement officers have made the ultimate sacrifice.
  • Three police officers from Alhambra have been killed in the line of duty. A peace officer memorial to the fallen officers is located near the entrance to the police station headquarters on First Street.
  • The number of officers on the City's police force is 90, of which ten are female.
  • When officers wear a black shroud or band over their badges, it is to commemorate an officer killed in the line of duty in California, or during Peace Officer Memorial Week.
  • Alhambra's citizen volunteer programs include Citizens on Patrol, of which there are currently about 20 participants; Neighborhood Watch, comprised of approximately 190 groups throughout the city; and Citizens Police Academy, which has trained over 400 residents.
