SENIOR ACTIVITIES CALENDAR

The Community Services Senior Division offers a variety of programs and activities for adults age 60+, including recreation, social services, nutrition and transportation. As a designated Focal Point by the Los Angeles County Area Agency on Aging for the Southwest San Gabriel Valley Community Services Area, the Center also serves as a central access point for information and services to assist senior citizens and their family members.
 

Alzheimer's Association Safe Return Program

This program, sponsored by the Alzheimer Association Safe Return Program, serves to locate, identify, and safely return persons with dementia who wander and become lost. The Joslyn Center is a registration site for this nation-wide system

Case Management Project

Free assistance is available to Alhambra seniors age 60+ and functionally-impaired adults 18+ as a means to live independently and safely in their homes for as long as possible. The program provides information in English, Mandarin and Spanish. Case Management caseworkers can assist (English, Mandarin and Spanish) by providing contacts for Medicare, Medi-Cal and Social Security, and also serve as advocates for medical and mental health referrals, in-home service referrals, transportation, nutritional referrals, counseling and much, much more. Grocery Runs
Shop at your favorite market and enjoy friendly shopping companions. Senior Ride drivers will assist you on and off the vehicle with your bags (four bag maximum per rider). Grocery runs are made to Super A Foods, 300 W. Main St., (Wednesdays, 8 a.m.-10 a.m.); Ralphs, 345 E. Main St. (Thursdays, 8 a.m.-10 a.m.); Ralphs, 330 N. Atlantic Blvd. (Saturdays, 10 a.m.-noon)
Home-Delivered Meals Program

Home-delivered hot meals are provided at no cost to home-bound seniors age 60+.  Alhambra seniors can sign up for the program directly with Intervale Senior Services by calling 626-858-8382 and identify yourself as an Alhambra resident (all information is strictly confidential). Voluntary donations are welcome, but there is no obligation to donate. Supported through CDBG funds.
In-Home Registry

Assistance is available to seniors who need help with house cleaning, minor home repairs, personal care, shopping and companion care. The Registry program can simplify the process of finding good help by connecting seniors with qualified, prescreened workers. The senior is responsible for paying the worker. Pay is negotiated between the senior and the worker.
 Free Legal Assistance

The practice of Carlos Arcos, Attorney at Law, provides free legal consultations concerning wills, trusts, probate and other estate planning matters. Appointments are required (call 626-570-5056) and free telephone consultations are preliminary to an appointment.

Movers & Shakers Senior Walking Program

Co-sponsored by Alhambra Hospital, this program offers an exciting, ongoing walking program for seniors, whereby they can participate in exercise activities in the great outdoors and meet new friends. An annual $5 membership fee includes a T-shirt and membership card. The group meets at Almansor Park walking track Monday and Wednesday at 8 a.m.
Alhambra Council of Senior Citizens Affairs Meets the second Tuesday of every even-numbered month at 10 a.m.
Alhambra Case Management Project Advisory Board  Meets the second Thursday of the month at 10 a.m.
Senior Nutrition Lunch Program

Nutritious lunches for seniors are available Monday-Friday at 11 a.m. at Joslyn Center. Suggested donation is $1.50. Reservations are required two days in advance. Participants must arrive and pick up their lunch ticket by 10:45 a.m. on any day they intend to have lunch. Special lunch events are often conducted in conjunction with holidays and birthdays are celebrated monthly. Special celebrations are published in the Senior Calendar and Senior Scene, a bimonthly hardcopy calendar published by the Senior Services Division. Another senior nutrition program (not affiliated with the City) is offered through Granada Park United Methodist Church. The N.A.P. Senior Nutrition Program provides lunches for 25 to 45 seniors daily. For more information about this program, call 626-284-3401

Senior Transportation

Senior Ride is provided FREE to Alhambra residents ages 60+ or disabled of any age. This curb-to-curb service is available to transport participants throughout Alhambra for any purpose, and up to two miles outside the city for medical appointments. To register bring a photo ID and proof of Alhambra residency (such as a utility bill or bank statement) to one of the registration sites listed below. Non-Senior Disabled residents will be required to provide verification from their doctor that they are not able to ride public transportation.
  • Registration for Senior Ride - Call 626-289-RIDE (7433)
    Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Sat. & Sun. 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., or visit the Community Services Department, 111 S. First St., or Joslyn Adult Recreation Center, 210 N. Chapel Ave. 
     
  • Types of Service - (1) Advance Reservations for the best service. Schedule an appointment at least three days in advance;
    (2) Subscription service for regular appointments. Schedule a ride on a daily/weekly basis, but in the event of a schedule change, call to cancel your pick-up time or your ride will automatically arrive at the scheduled time; (3) Demand-Response - For emergencies (i.e., doctor's appointment), you may call the same day for a ride. Every effort will be made to accommodate your needs and to arrive as near as possible to your chose time. Rides are not guaranteed.
     
  • Special Assistance - Please let us know when making your reservation if you will need special assistance. Although all vehicles are equipped with wheelchair lifts, we need to schedule adquate time to accommodate your needs. If you are physically disabled or frail and will need assistance, you may bring an "escort." Drivers cannot escort you from or into any building. When you make your reservation, notify the dispatcher that  you will need two seats. Companions will not be allowed to ride unless they are either eligible for Senior Ride or are serving as an "escort."
     
  • Guidelines - Because Senior Ride is a free service and much in demand, please follow the following guidelines: (1) Wait outside in front of your pick-up address; (2) Be ready 10 minutes before your scheduled departure time; (3) Vehicles may arrive 10 minutes before and 10 minutes after your scheduled time; (4) If you are picked up more than 10 minutes after your scheduled time, notify us immediately by calling 626-570-5088; (5) Cancel any appointment you do not need. 

Social Security Representative

A Social Security representative is available each month to provide information and assist in completing social security, S.S.I. and disability applications. Appointments are required.

Homebound seniors are connected with a senior volunteer from the Case Management Project. Weekly calls are made to check on their safety and well-being and provide contact with the outside world. Volunteer callers are needed to continue this program.

Senior volunteers are needed to help out at the Front Desk and to work with Case Management staff, which provides a great way to meet (and greet) the friendly folks at the Joslyn Center. Case Management volunteers assist in making telephone calls and/or visits to local homebound seniors. Morning / afternoon positions available are available for both volunteer positions. All interested volunteers must be age 55+.
