Alhambra Park

Veterans Memorial Site Dedicated

(Congressman Adam Schiff Participates with Veterans and City Officials)

A plaque honoring Alhambra veterans of
all wars has been re-installed on the
  Memorial Rock in Alhambra Park.
The ceremony, officiated by Mayor Mark
Paulson, was held to dedicate parkland
adjacent to the rock and recently planted
memorial trees as the site for a future
Veterans Memorial. It could have been
a veterans convention, based upon the
  attendance of representatives from several
veterans, but it was, rather a show of
support for the city's efforts towards the
establishment of a memorial that will be
dedicated to the men and women who
  graciously and unselfishly dedicated their
  lives to our country.

A Veterans Memorial Committee--made up of veterans organization representatives, the Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Alhambra, has been working on this project since last year, and are energized by the receipt of a $250,000 Economic Development Initiative Grant secured through the office of Congressman Adam Schiff.

Congressman Schiff, sharing the story of his father's persistence in joining the armed forces and serving his country, related that he was "raised to have great respect for those who served our country, especially during war." Schiff has therefore visited members of our armed forces, throughout the world, demonstrating his deep respect for their dedication and patriotism.

[Former] City Councilman Dan Arguello, the City Council representative to the Memorial Committee, recognized those active in the committee's work: Gilbert Aguero, American Legion Post No. 139; Arthur Lynch, Reservist in the United States Army; Debra Moreno-Garcia, Vice President of the City of Alhambra Arts and Cultural Events Committee; and Owen Guenthard, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce.

Councilman Arguello stated that "Requests for Proposals" have been circulated to start the memorial's design project, and that design concepts should be reviewed in early 2007.

Names of Alhambra Veterans
The California Department of Veterans Affairs provides a listing of the names of Californians in military service who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Vietnam Conflict. The following page lists the names of Alhambra residents who gave their lives in this conflict.

If you know the name of an Alhambra resident currently in military service, or who has previously served our country in any branch of service, we would appreciate being able to recognize them as part of our memorial site. For more information, call (626) 570-3252.
