 LEISURE ACTIVITIES GUIDE

WINTER/SPRING 2010 LEISURE ACTIVITIES GUIDE

  • NEW SPRING TUMBLING CLASS FOR KIDS, AGE 7-19 YEARS
    (Begins March 29, 2010) Tuesdays, 6:30 p.m. at the Payke Gymnastics Academy, 107 S. Garfield Ave. Class features the serious basics of tumbling, including time on the tumble-trampoline, the vault, gymnastics (floor basics to advanced moves). This program is for those with varying levels osf experience--dancers, cheerleaders, martial art folks, break dancers, free runners, and anyone who wants to lear some cool new stuff. Fee: $127 for 8 weeks of instruction.

 WINTER SPORTS LEAGUES

  • Teen Basketball League   
    Registration is NOW being accepted for play beginning in March 2010!
    League games will be played at the Almansor Park Gym on Fridays from 4 p.m.-9 p.m. (and, if needed, on Sundays from 12 p.m.-5 p.m.)
      
    A Mandatory Players' Meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 16 at 5:30 p.m. in the Almansor Park Gym.
    The League is for high school age boys and girls (freshman through senior). Registrants must be a resident of Alhambra (proof of residency required, i.e., utility bill) or attend a high school in Alhambra (proof includes school I.D. or report card from Alhambra High School, San Gabriel High School, Mark Keppel High School, or Century High School. Phone registrants may fax their residency/school proof to (626) 570-6842. Registration will continue until the league is full, but the deadline registration date is Friday, March 19. The registration fee is $30 per person (and payment wil be accepted by cashier's check, money order, company check, exact cash, personal check, and MasterCard/Visa). Individual registrants are not guaranteed a team roster spot, but every attempt will be made to place an individual on a team. For additional information, call (626) 570-5081.

 

 ALHAMBRA FARMER'S MARKET

The Alhambra Certified Farmers’ Market, operating every Sunday (except Easter) from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monterey Street (1 block east of Garfield, ½ block south of Main), had a blowout 25-year birthday celebration last summer, and now is continuing to provide the best fresh California-grown fruit and produce to throngs of shoppers who have made the Alhambra market one of the busiest and best in the San Gabriel Valley. For more information about the Alhambra Certified Farmers’ Market, please call 626-570-5081 weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  And we’ll see you on Monterey Street next Sunday!

  • Saturday, March 20, 2010 - Taste of Solvang
    9 a.m.-7 p.m. Enjoy the "Walking Smorgasbord" of 50 delicious taste stops located around the village. There are bakeries, restaurants, gourmet specialty shops, candy and coffee shops, retail stores, and more. Each participant will receive a shopping and dining sample coupon book. Fee: $50 per person
     
  • Saturday, May 1 - Tom's Farm in Corona and Downtown Temecula - 9 a.m.-9 p.m. It's a perfect day of family fun, where you and the kids can enjoy train rides, tractor-driving, pony rides, a petting zoo, magic shows, and more. Also available - fascinating crafts, a sweet shop, and gourmet foods. After lunch (on your own), we'll spend the afternoon visiting lovely downtown Temecula. You can stroll through many shops and restaurants or take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage. Fee $15 per person
     
  • Saturday, May 15, 2010 - Strawberry Festival
    10 a.m.-6 p.m. This weekend celebration offers a spectacle of strawberry fun for each and everyone and is ranked among one of the top festivals in the nation. Guest enjoy award-winning attractions, interactive exhibits, gooey contests, the hottest names in entertainment, the largest collection of fine arts & crafts with 200+ booths, and an unbelievable assortment of delicious strawberry foods and beverages. The Strawberry Promenade offers cooking demonstrations and presentations, and Strawberryland for Kids boasts free rides, puppet shows, and more. Fee: $20 per person
     
  • Saturday, May 22 - Coronado Island - 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Take a relaxing ride to beautiful Coronado Island, just over the sweeping bridge from San Diego. Visit the many shops and restaurants (lunch on your own), spend time at the beach, and/or take a tour through the famous Hotel Del Coronado. Fee: $15 per person
     
  • Saturday, June 12 - Orange County BBQ Cook-Off & Family Festival - 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Enjoy music and entertainment, a classic car show, an awesome kid zone, and great food. Fee: $20 per person

 

 AFTER-SCHOOL PLAYGROUND SITES

After school youth recreation programs are held at nine school sites.
Activities include team and individual sports and alternative programs.
Alternative programs will include: arts and crafts, table game
tournaments, four square, kickball and new games. In case of rain,
sites may be closed. For more information, please call the Recreation
Services Division office at (626) 570-5081. This is a drop-in activitity. 
Participants are free to come and go without restriction.

** Registration is required for all Family Excursions. Space is limited and is based on a first-come, first-serve basis. A parent or  guardian must accompany children under the age of 18. Refund and Cancellation Policy - tickets are non-refundable. If your schedule changes, you may find a replacement on your own, or if a waiting list has been established, staff will furnish you with a possible replacement from the list. Family Excursions are subject to cancellation or schedule change if trip minimums are not met. If the City of Alhambra cancels a trip, participants will receive a full refund. If you have a physical disability and require special assistance, please notify staff at the time of registration. All excursions include round-trip, deluxe motorcoach transportation. All trips depart from and return to the Alhambra City Yard, 900 S. New Ave., Alhambra.
