after 12:30 p.m.

The American flag will be flying all over Alhambra on the Fourth of July. The City of America's annual Birthday Party & Celebration in Alhambra begins at 3 p.m. That's when food vendors will begin selling their patriotic hot dogs and other nourishing meals and snacks. The celebration will end following an amazing fireworks spectacular that begins at 9 p.m.

Many attendees will bring their own picnic baskets and soft drinks to the party, but we heartily recommend that you plan to purchase your holiday meal AT the park, where local youth groups, and those who support youth groups, will be earning money to keep their services alive and growing (youth groups interested in participating should call 626-570-5044, during weekday business hours, for information).

Thanks are due to the members of the City of Alhambra Youth Commission for their efforts in organizing the food vendors, and their solicitation of prizes to be awarded to the groups who decorate their booths in the most patriotic manner.

Parking, as usual, will be at a premium at Almansor Park.  Close-by pay lots will be available at the West San Gabriel Valley YMCA and the Emmaus Lutheran Church, and limited handicapped parking will be available in Almansor Park’s lower parking lot (check with the monitor’s at the driveway entrance).

The 42nd Annual Flag-Raising Ceremony and Pancake Breakfast, hosted by Boy Scout Troop #201 will be held on Friday, July 4 at 8 a.m. at 1919 Huntington Drive, South Pasadena. This fund-raising event is a traditional event according to Scoutmaster Kenny Larsen with the leaders and parents cooking the pancakes, and the scouts raising the flag. Tickets are $5 per person or $20 for a family. Tickets can be purchased at the door or by sending a check to Kenny Larsen, 429 N. Chapel Ave., Apt. F, Alhambra, CA 91801.

To ensure that everyone has a good time at the Fourth of July Celebration,
the Alhambra Fire Department urges everyone to follow these simple "safe and sane" fireworks rules:

  • The only fireworks allowed at the celebration are those that will be shot into the air at 9 p.m. DO NOT bring any fireworks to the park!
  • Fireworks should be purchased only from licensed, approved vendors. Any fireworks purchased must contain the "Safe & Sane" seal of the State Fire Marshall.
  • You must be at least 16 years old to purchase "Safe & Sane" fireworks.
  • Once purchased, private use of fireworks in Alhambra can only be conducted on your own personal, exterior property, such as a yard or driveway. They cannot be ignited on City sidewalks, streets, parks, or in any public place.
  • Children should NOT handle ANY fireworks at any time--not even sparklers.
  • Firecrackers are not the same as fireworks and are generally considered ILLEGAL because they explode. Sometime firecrackers are allowed at special religious ceremonies if a special permit is obtained and strict guidelines are followed.
  • If you use, store or sell illegal fireworks, you can go to jail--and also be fined as well--depending on the specific violation.
  • If a "firework" explodes, lifts off the ground, or travels more than 3 feet, it is an ILLEGAL firework.
  • Most injuries involving the misuse of fireworks in the United States are major, and include everything from severe burns, severed limbs and million-dollar-loss structure fires.
