Mini lights are better for safety, but don't leave them on when you're away!

Holiday Safety Tips for a Merry, Merry Holiday

The Alhambra Fire Department wishes each and every Alhambra resident the most merry of holiday seasons -- and to that end the following are tips they ask you to follow to help ensure a happy and safe season for all.

  • Tip #1: Make a Fresh Cut! After choosing a fresh tree to bring home, make a new 2-inch cut at the base of the tree. This will open up pores clogged by sap, and allow the tree to "drink" water. If an artificial tree is purchased, be sure that it includes the label of a testing laboratory (U.L. or F.M.) and that it has been flame-treated or is made of fire retardant material.

  • Tip #2: Fill 'er Up! After cutting at the base, place the fresh tree in a large, sturdy container or tree stand that holds at least one gallon of water. Because an average tree can consume over two quarts of water per day, the container should be filled daily. A dry tree can be consumed in just seconds!

  • Tip #3: Limit the Lighting! Whether on the tree or used outdoors, mini lights produce less heat and are, therefore, safer. Limit the number of extension cords used to connect light strands, and always check for cracked or frayed cords that should be thrown away and replaced with new ones. Decorative lighting should not be left on when going to sleep or leaving the house unoccupied.

  • Tip #4: Three around the Tree! If you want Santa (or one of his helpers) to leave a lot of presents under the tree, give him -- and the tree -- some room. Keep the tree at least three feet away from fireplaces, stoves, heat vents, television sets, or portable heaters. The majority of Christmas tree fires in the United States start because they are placed too close to these appliances.

  • Tip #5: Candle with Care! Between 1993 and 1997, candles caused 8,690 home fires, and were responsible for over 100 fatalities. Over $126 million in property damage, and over 948 civilian injuries were directly attributed to the unsafe use of candles. Candles should be kept away from Christmas trees and other decorative foliage. Place candles where they cannot be bumped into or be accidentally knocked over. Use of candles in sleeping rooms is strongly discouraged. Candles should never be allowed to burn while unattended or when everyone is asleep. use candles that are sturdy and large enough to collect dripping wax. Do not allow children to carry candles, and ensure that matches are out of their reach. Candles should NEVER be used in place of electricity for emergency lighting. Battery operated flashlights are a safer choice.

  • Tip #6: Inspection for Detection! Ensure that your home has at least one operable smoke detector with a fresh battery. Test at least once a month.

  • Tip #7: Bag It, don't Burn It! Immediately after the holiday Christmas trees should be cut into small sections and placed outside in a trash bag for pick up. Branches should NEVER be burned -- the mixture of tar, creosol, and flammable pine needles can result in an explosive, dangerous fire.
