New Fire Training Facility will enable firefighters to maintain a state of readiness and preparation for emergencies.

Fire Training Facility Dedicated

The Fire Department's new Fire Training Facility was officially dedicated on March 25, 2004. The four-story tower contains a live-fire burn room, interior training stairwell, water drafting and recovery system, balconies for rescue simulation, and fixed fire protection equipment. Exercises involving decontamination, search & rescue, and live fire training can also be simulated and conducted within the new structure.

Real, controlled fires can be set in the facility's live burn room, allowing both new and seasoned firefighters to gain realistic experience in actual firefighting. Fire sprinkler and standpipe systems are installed within the building.

The tower has an interior stairwell and exterior balconies, where fire personnel can simulate the rescue of trapped persons. Exercises involving hose lines, ladders, use of tools, search & rescue, smoke ventiliation, and related training will all be possible in the facility.

The site will also facilitate the training of citizens in disaster preparedness, fire extinguisher operations, and CPR/First-aid training. It will allow for joint training exercises with other fire departments, and can also be used by police personnel in preparing for critical incidents.

Alhambra firefighters and paramedics must complete a minimum of 224 hours of training per year (per federal state and local mandates). The new facility is located adjacent to the Alhambra City Yard, and was aptly addressed "911 South New Avenue" both in remembrance of the September 11th Twin Towers tragedy in New York City, and because 9-1-1 is the phone number to call when requesting help in an emergency.
