March 2011 CERT Refresher Training Class Participants

Are you ready for a disaster?

In the hours following a disaster, it is quite possible that emergency response agencies may be overwhelmed and unable to respond immediately to your neighborhood. Participants in the Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) program are provided with skills to survive a disaster and provide neighborhood assistance until emergency agencies can respond.

Basic training (based on FEMA's CERT program) includes:

  • Emergency disaster preparedness - how to prepare for a major disaster by making homes safer and stocking supplies that are important to have in the home in case
    of an emergency.
  • First Aid - how to perform life-saving techniques such as first-aid, fire suppression,
    light search and rescue.
  • Communications and Good Team Work - development of these skills is very
important to being successful and the instructors emphasize them in the training.

CERT AND COMMUNITY EVENTS
CERT team members help the community prepare for the winter rains by filling sandbags. On January 8, 2011, 26 CERT members, plus cadets, and fire fighters filled close to  a 1,000 bags. They can be obtained by residents at all the fire stations.

CERT team members help recruit new members and distribute pamphlets about disaster preparedness at local events, including the annual Lunar New Year Celebration when hundreds of people stop by the CERT booth.

CERT team members are trained to take the Community Fire Safety Trailer to schools and special events to teach children and adults about residential fire safety. This includes setting up and stabilizing the trailer, assisting fire department personnel with the training sessions (and possibly even leading the training), as well as monitoring the control station.
