- Conducts Plan Checks (626-570-5193) - As part of the process of obtaining a fire safety permit, applicants must also submit three sets of complete plans for the installation of fire sprinklers, fire suppression systems, fire alarm systems and tenant improvements. Both fire sprinkler and fire alarm plans must also contain three sets of hydraulic calculations and standby battery calculations, respectively. Plans must contain all information required by the appropriate Code or NFPA Standard. Generally, the average inspection turn around time is 3-7 days for most submittals. For simple plans, over-the-counter plan checks can be requested. For fire sprinkler systems, the fee varies according to the designated total number of sprinkler heads and is based on a $50 per hour fee. This fee includes the plan check, underground and weld inspections, (if applicable) hydrostatic tests, rough and final inspections. For all other fire systems, a straight $50 an hour fee will be assessed, and includes all appropriate tests and inspections. Additional inspections or plan re-submittals (due to non-compliance) may require additional fees. For more information concerning plan checks, call 626-570-5193.
- Conducts Fire Inspections (626-570-5193) - Inspections are provided for occupancy, state fire clearance, residential, fire sprinkler, fire alarm, fire suppression systems, general fire hazard, underground tank, and other fire-related inspections. Some inspections require an approved set of plans and/or a permit before an inspection can be scheduled. If possible, 48 hours notice should be given. However, in some cases last-minute inspection requests may be accommodated. Inspections can be scheduled by calling 626-570-5193.
- Ensures Compliance with Hazardous Materials Disclosure (626) 570-3234) - Businesses that handle threshold amounts of hazardous materials, generate any amount of hazardous waste, and/or plan to install, operate, or remove an underground storage tank are required to obtain a permit.
The minimum threshold limit is aggregate quantities equal to or more than 10 gallons in liquids, 10 pounds in weight, or 10 cubic feet in gases at standard temperature and pressure. The State of California requires disclosure of hazardous materials in quantities equal to or greater than 55 gallons, 500 pounds, or 200 cubic feet of gas at standard temperature and pressure. The federal government requires an inventory from businesses with hazardous chemicals in amounts equal to or greater than 10,000 pounds, extremely hazardous substances in an amount equal or greater than 500 pounds, or the Threshold Planning Quantity, whichever is lower. Typical hazardous materials include photographic chemicals, motor oil, antifreeze, paint, any flammable liquid, solvent, parts cleaner, transmission fluid, freon, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, oxygen, helium, propane, and acetylene. Businesses that often generate hazardous waste materials include metal finishers, auto repair/auto body shops, printers, dry cleaners, and plastics and ceramics manufacturers. Hazardous substances contained in food, drug, cosmetic, or tobacco products are exempt from reporting when the product is packaged and presented for retail sale, unless the individual container size is equal to, or exceeds the reportable quantities (10 lbs., 10 gals., or 10 cu. ft. for compressed gas).
