 ENVISION ALHAMBRA 2035 UPDATE

The Envision Alhambra 2035 Open House provided an opportunity for the public to express opinions and suggestions about how to improve various aspects of the City. There were booths manned by eleven city departments that provided information about how City Hall operates, along with other public agencies and booths where children had an opportunity to participate in crafts and other activities.

COMMUNITY BEGINS TO ENVISION ALHAMBRA IN 2035

The City of Alhambra is already putting pen to paper to envision what kind of community it wants to create over the next 25 years – by envisioning the Alhambra of 2035.  To help formulate this vision, the City has been gathering community input and suggestions from residents as well as community leaders through the help of the Planning Center/DC&E, a planning firm contracted to produce an updated Community Profile and Visioning document that will also be used to update the City’s General Plan. The Envision 2035 program is being funded by a Compass Blueprint Demonstration grant from the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG).

At a recent Open House, the community's concern and suggestions centered around several reoccurring themes. These involved transit, especially better opportunities for bicycle and pedestrian circulation and safety; more open space; and general support for continuing infill development, particularly in the downtown area.

Each of these issues corresponds to key areas identified by SCAG’s Growth Vision which encourages:

• Focusing growth in existing and
  emerging center and along major
  transportation corridors
• Creating significant areas of mixed-use
  development and walkable communities
• Targeting growth around existing and
  planned transit stations
• Preserving existing open space and
  stable residential areas

The upcoming work program for the Envision Alhambra 2035 campaign will involve the preparation of a Community Profile, a basic framework for understanding the broad range of issues related to community planning and development over the next several years. The document will assimilate feedback from various community outreach sessions, and incorporate community data from a physical, social, environmental and economic perspective. It will also explore issues confronting the City as it defines its long-term vision and will conclude with a “toolbox” of recommendations and strategies, such as recommendations for funding sources and facilitation of more focused studies/analyses.  As part of this effort, the City’s General Plan will be updated administratively to incorporate General Plan Amendments made over the past 25 years, as well as updated data from the most recent 2010 U.S. Census.

SUMMARY OF COMMUNITY INPUT

On October 22, 2011, the community was invited to participate in the first public event in support of the Envision Alhambra 2035 campaign, an open house aimed at gaining insight into the community’s likes, dislikes, desires and general sentiments about Alhambra. The event, held at Almansor Park, was intended to have both a fun and serious side and included representatives from eleven city departments and public agencies participating as a “mini-City Hall,” as well as children’s craft and activity stations.

The event was considered a success with about 500 persons in attendance. Click on the links above to read what those in attendance had to say about their vision for Alhambra in 2035.
