Fremont Plaza - SE Corner Fremont & Commonwealth

When the former retail giant Sears and Roebuck closed its doors in 1993, leading to an immediate loss of over 200 jobs and $180,000 in annual sales tax revenue, this project provided a watershed opportunity for the city to aggressively begin a process of redevelopment, beginning with the renovation of the Plaza at a total cost of $5,300,000. Using Section 108 financing, the Agency took on the project in its entirety, from rehabilitation and construction, to leasing and maintenance. Current estimated value at over $12 million. Due to the Agency's outstanding achievements in completing the process, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) presented the City with a "John J. Gunther Blue Ribbon Practices in Community Development" Award.

Current Plaza tenants include Taco Bell, El Pollo Loco, Toys 'R' Us, Petsmart and Party City. What's more, an Albertson's Market was built on the property directly adjacent to the Plaza and employs roughly 75 people. Fremont Plaza's combined businesses provide employment for roughly 260 people (a majority of who are Alhambra residents). The site produces $80,000 in annual tax increment revenue, $945,000 in annual lease revenue to the Agency and City and $250,000 in annual sales tax.
