Free hearing screenings are offered each month on the first Tuesday of the month from 9:30-11:00 a.m. Provided by First American Hearing Aid Center. Appointments are required. Free blood pressure screenings are held every Monday at 10 a.m.

Joslyn Adult Center - Where Seniors have Fun!

Joslyn Adult Center, 210 North Chapel Avenue, is where everything "senior" happens in Alhambra--hot lunches every weekday, seminars to enhance your health and pocketbook, clubs, dance groups, classes, senior outings, and much more. If you're not visiting Joslyn  regularly (like every day!), you're definitely missing out on some of the fun.

August 2008

  • August 25 - Wizard of Oz Luncheon Celebration - 11 a.m. The Wizard of Oz premiered on this day in 1939. Celebrate with Dorothy, the Scarecrow, Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion and Toto (you're not in Kansas anymore, Alhambra seniors, you're in the Joslyn Center in Alhambra!). After lunch, enjoy a screening of (you guessed it) the Wizard of Oz. Co-sponsored by the California Mission Inn.

  • Wednesday, August 27 - Palm Springs Aerial Tram Tour and Lunch - 8:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. This tramway has the world's largest rotating tram cars that carry visitors from the Valley Station to the Mountain Station (and what a view!) Lunch will be served at the Mountain Stationl. Both the tram ride and the lunch are included in the price. Fee: $35. For reservations and/or for more information, call (626) 570-5056.

  • Thursday, September 4, 2008 - “40/70 Rule” Seminar - 6:30 p.m. A guide designed to help adult children and aging parents deal with sensitive life topics. Presented by Home Instead. To register and/or for  more information, call (626) 570-5056, during weekday business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  

  • Friday, September 5 - "Grandparents Day" Luncheon Celebration - 11 a.m. Grandparents will be celebrated, but even if you don't share the title of "Grandparent," your life has certainly had a positive impact on many young ones, and you are heartily invited to share in the festivities.   • Wednesday, September 10 - Los Angeles County Fair - 10:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.  The Los Angeles County Fair is one of Southern California’s greatest traditions.   • Thursday, September 18 - San Pedro Senior Outing - 9 a.m.-4 p.m. San Pedro has so much to see if you’re willing to go on an adventure. Take the trolley (on your own) to discover exciting sites such as Ports O’ Call, Point Fermin Park and Lighthouse, the Korean Bell of Friendship, or Los Angeles Maritime Museum.   • September 16 and 17 - "55 Alive" Defensive Driver Class sponsored by AARP - 12:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. each day. Accepted by many insurance companies (such as AAA Insurance and Hartford Insurance) for a discount  - check with your insurer. Fee is just $10 (check or money order - no cash) made out to AARP. 
     
  • September 18 -  "55 Alive" Defensive Driver Refresher Class sponsored by AARP (for those who have previously taken the "55 Alive" Defensive Driver Class. This class is one day only. Fee is just $10 (check or money order - no cash) made out to AARP.
     
  • Monday, September 22 - “Sun and Skin Damage Screening” - 9:30 a.m.-11:00 a.m. Presented by Aetna. To register and/or for  more information, call (626) 570-5056, during weekday business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
     
  • Tuesday, September 23 - "Ray Charles Birthday" Celebration - 11 a.m. Ray Charles entertained us for over 50 years - with such hits as "Unchain My Heart," "Hit the Road Jack," "George on My Mind," and many, many others - and we'll honor him, and his birthday. Thanks to SCAN for co-sponsoring this event. Registration is required at least two days in advance by calling (626) 458-4455, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

  • Friday, October 3 - Gene Autry Museum Tour - 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Gene Autry’s vision was "to build a museum which would exhibit and interpret the heritage of the West and show how it influenced American and the world." Come and experience the West on docent led tour of the museum. Tour and lunch are included in price of ticket. Fee: $20. For reservations and/or for more information, call (626) 570-5056.   • Wednesday, October 15 - Downtown Ventura - 8:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Downtown Ventura boasts museums, a mission, and many wonderful antique and thrift shops for all to explore. The Museum of Ventura County costs $3.00 for seniors. Admission and self guided tour of San Buenaventura Mission is a donation of $2.00. (Admissions and Lunch on you own). Fee: $12. November 2008

  • Monday, November 3 - Reagan Library - 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Learn first hand about the legacy of the man who came to be known as “the greatest communicator.” Special exhibits include Air Force One, and “A First Lady’s Style” (a display of over 80 of Nancy Reagan’s dresses, suits and gowns). There is a café on site to purchase lunch or you are welcome to enjoy a sack lunch on your own. Ticket includes admission and 2 hour docent led tour. (Lunch on your own).   • Tuesday, November 4 - Registration for December Senior Outings -
     
  • Friday, November 14 - Pilgrim Place Festival in Claremont - 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Share in a unique “Pilgrim Experience.” There are fun activities for everyone. Browse through a craft fair and bazaar. A historical play, reliving the story about the settling of America, will be on site. Terrific food can be purchased at different booths. (Lunch on your own). Fee: $10. December 2008

  • Wednesday, December 17 - Mission Inn Tour and Festival of Lights in Riverside - 11:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Tour the historic Mission Inn and stay to see the spectacular Festival of Lights. Over two million lights and several beautiful displays transform the Mission Inn in to an amazing winter wonderland. Ticket includes docent led tour. (Lunch on your own). Fee: $20.
