 Eco-Friendly Ideas

  • Purify Air with Houseplants
The EPA estimates indoor air to be two to 10 times more polluted than the air outdoors. Building materials, furnishings, carpet backing, cleaning products, computer circuitry and printers continuously release pollutants. Plants are not only nice to look at, they are also great, natural air purifiers. While opting for non-toxic products will help control indoor pollution, populating the house with plants is a fantastic way to "grow" fresh air every day.
  • Don’t use Pesticides/Herbicides on your Lawn.
Along with nitrogen fertilizer runoff, these are major water pollutants. Instead, apply liquid organic fertilizers to yards, flowers, gardens and crops. They are cheaper and faster acting than any other fertilizing method and pose less of a threat to our water table.
  • Quit Smoking.
Second-hand smoke is a major indoor air pollutant and health hazard. When you quit, both you and your family will lead longer and healthier lives.
  • Install a Water Filter in your Home.
Clean, safe water without all of the waste. This is a simple home improvement that is smart, easy and cost-cutting and no more plastic water bottles, no more fossil fuels used to deliver the H20, plus no more water delivery bills.
  • Drink Shade-Grown Coffee.
With increased demand for cheap coffee, many growers have moved toward full-sun plantations, clearing the habitat of numerous native birds and increasing the use of pesticides and fertilizers.
  • Apply Coffee Grounds to help Vegetables, Roses, and other Plants.
Coffee grounds are high in nitrogen, but are also acidic. Adding brown material such as leaves and dried grass to the mulch will help keep a balanced soil pH. The proper amount to be used depends on the condition of the soil and, more specifically, what you are growing in your garden. Check with your local gardening expert to see what is best for your situation. Adding coffee grounds to your compost bin will generate heat and help speed up the composting process. Coffee grounds act as a green material with a carbon-nitrogen (C-N) ratio of 20-1.
  • Plant Trees.
Plant trees which store CO2. Teaching our children to love and care for the planet is the most important thing we can do to insure the future of humankind.
  • Use Baking Soda as a Natural Surface Cleaner.
Mix 1/2 cup baking soda with enough liquid dishwashing detergent to create a frosting-like consistency. Apply mixture to a sponge as an ideal cleaner for any sink. Or, if you don't want to use a sponge, dip half a lemon in baking soda for a great sink cleaner.
  • Make your own Disinfectant Spray.
Combine 1/4 cup vinegar, 2 cups water, and 10 drops lemon oil or tea-tree oil. Another good recipe is 2 teaspoons tea-tree oil and 2 cups of water mixed in a spray bottle. Shake well before spraying onto problem areas.
  • Use Club Soda as a Window and Glass Cleaner.
Use a 100 percent cotton cloth to wipe off the club soda.
