Electronic / Universal Waste

Electronic Waste (E-Waste)
 

Electronic waste items are picked up at curbside by Allied Waste Services (AWS) every Wednesday (however, you must follow the procedure indicated below.) Eligible items include computer monitors, television sets, TV/VCR combos; computer peripheral items (CPUs, mice, keyboards, printers and scanners) and personal electronics, (cell phones, radios, alarm clocks and hair dryers).
 

E-Waste Collection Procedure:

  1. Call AWS Customer Service at 
    (888) 742-5234. State that your require a bulky item pickup and what types of items are to be included
    (i.e., 1 computer, 1 printer, etc.)
  2. Label each item. Place a sticker or label on the item and mark it with your address (no need to include your name or phone number)
  3. Place item(s) on the curb after noon on the day preceeding collection. (If, for some reason, the items are not picked up make sure to remove the items before 6 a.m. the following day.)

Universal Waste (U-Waste)
 
All items referred to as universal waste are banned from the trash and must be taken to a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Event or dropped off at a S.A.F.E. Collection Center. Universal waste items include household batteries: cell phone and hearing aid batteries; electronic devices: TVs and monitors (flat and CRTs), computers (CPU) and laptops, printers, VCRs, cell phones, telephones and cordless phones, answering machines, microwaves, radios; fluorescent tubes and bulbs and other mercury-containing lamps: neon bulbs; mercury-containing devices: thermostats, switches, thermometer, pressure and vacuum gauges, dental amalgam, novelty items, counter weights and dampers, medical devices such as dilators and weighted tubing, certain rubber flooring, and gas flow regulators used in old residential gas meters.

Recycling Services offered by Computer Manufacturers

Many computer manufacturers will recycle your old computer equipment (most at no charge) when you purchase a new computer through either their online website or a qualified retailer. The following manufacturers offer a computer recycling program, trade-in and/or asset recovery services: 

Recycling Cellular Phones and Batteries
 
Retailers that sell cellular phones and rechargeable batteries must abide by two laws (AB 2901 AB 1125) that require them to have in place, and promote, a system for accepting and collecting these products at no charge to the consumer. For more information on recycling cellular phones and rechargeable batteries, click here.  Note: Remember to protect your personal information by erasing all cell phone data before recycling it. The following website can assist you in removing this information because each cell phone is programmed differently.
