Code Enforcement: Shopping Carts

HOW TO REPORT AN ABANDONED SHOPPING CART

1) By Phone: If you see a stray shopping cart, call the City's Cart Retrieval Service
at 800-252-4613 or Code Enforcement at 626-570-3230, 24 hours daily. Please be
prepared to give the location (exact street address or nearest cross streets) of the
shopping cart.

2) iPhone: If you have an iPhone, use the innovative CartSnap App that allows users
to snap a photo of an abandoned shopping cart and swiftly sends its location and
identifying information to a central server. CartSnap then partners with Alhambra's
contracted retrieval service to quickly dispatch a driver to pick up the cart and
return it to its proper location - the retail store. Download the CartSnap phone
application from the iTunes App Store. For more information, visit www.cscrc.net.

3) Online Reporting: Make an online report of the abandoned shopping cart by
clicking here.

DID YOU KNOW IT'S A VIOLATION OF STATE LAW & CITY OF ALHAMBRA
MUNICIPAL CODE TO REMOVE A SHOPPING CART FROM A STORE'S PREMISES?

Do NOT remove a shopping cart from a store
and take it home with you – or leave it on a
city street, sidewalk, alley, private property, etc.

It is a violation of the State of California and
the City of Alhambra to remove a shopping cart
from a store without the store's permission.
(California Business and Professions Code, Section 22435 and AMC TITLE IX: PUBLIC PEACE & SAFETY, Chapter 9.76 Shopping Carts)

FACTS ABOUT ABANDONED SHOPPING CARTS
  • Wayward shopping carts give an unattractive and blighted appearance to Alhambra neighborhoods and can be dangerous to the children who play in and around them – leading to a potential accident.

  • At a cost of approximately $100 each, businesses must pick up the tab for the lost
carts — a cost that could get passed on to you, the customer.

  • The City's shopping cart retrieval company works 7 days per week to remove stray
carts and picks up approximately 1,000 shopping carts from neighborhoods and
    business districts each month.

  • If you have been authorized by a store to remove a shopping cart, you should
return the shopping cart to the store and not abandon it in a neighborhood or
    business district.

SHOPPING CART ETIQUETTE AND GUIDELINES
  • Return your cart to the cart storage area after loading your groceries in your car.
Don't just leave the cart in the parking lot where it could accidentally roll into a
nearby vehicle causing a dent or scratched paint to that person's vehicle.
(You wouldn't want the same thing to happen to your car one day.)

  • Do not block an aisle with your cart when shopping.

  • Your cart is a vehicle. Use good "cart sense" and watch where you push it.
Don't push a cart while talking on a cell phone. Avoid fast U-turns.

  • Do not allow your child to sit or stand in the cart's basket. It is all too easy for an unrestrained child to stand up and fall over the side. If a child is too old for the seat,
he or she should walk next to the parent. Do not allow your child to hang on or
"ride" the cart--carts can tip over easy.
