It's a violation of STATE LAW and the CITY OF ALHAMBRA to remove shopping carts from store premises. (California Business and Professions Code, Section 22435 and AMC TITLE IX: PUBLIC PEACE & SAFETY, Chapter 9.76 Shopping Carts)

Code Enforcement: Shopping Carts

  • Do NOT remove a shopping cart from any store premise and then take it home with you (or leave it on a city street, sidewalk, alley, other private property, etc.)!
  • It is a violation of the State of California to remove a shopping cart from a store without the store's permission. (California Business and Professions Code, Section 22435).
  • It is also a violation of the City of Alhambra to remove a shopping cart from a store without the store's permission. (TITLE IX: PUBLIC PEACE & SAFETY, Chapter 9.76 Shopping Carts)
  • If you see a stray shopping cart, call
    (800) 252-4613 (toll free number of
    the City's Cart retrieval company)
to have it removed. Or, call the
    Code Enforcement Division at
    (626) 570-3230, 24 hours daily.

Please be prepared to report the
    location (exact street address or
    nearest cross streets) of the
    shopping cart.

Wayward shopping carts are an eyesore to Alhambra neighborhoods and can be dangerous to the children who play in and around them. At a cost of approximately $100 each, businesses must pick up the tab for the lost carts — a cost that could get passed on to you, the customer. You can help keep the City of Alhambra beautiful by keeping our streets and neighborhoods free of abandoned carts.

    Shopping Cart Facts:

    • Stray shopping carts left on streets, sidewalks and private properties create an unattractive and blighted appearance in our community.

    • Retailers pass on the cost of retrieving shopping carts to you (the consumer).

    • The City needs your help to keep Alhambra beautiful by not removing shopping carts from parking lots.

    • Stray shopping carts can cause accidents.

    •  The City's shopping cart retrieval company works 7 days per week to remove stray carts and picks up approximately 1,000 shopping carts from neighborhoods and business districts each month.

    • If you have been authorized by a store to remove a shopping cart, you should return the shopping cart to the store and not abandon it in a neighborhood or business district.

    Shopping Cart Etiquette & Guidelines:

    • Return your cart to the cart storage area after loading your groceries in your car. Don't just leave the cart in the parking lot where it could accidentally roll into a nearby vehicle causing a dent or scratched paint to that person's vehicle. (You wouldn't want the same thing to happen to your "new" car one day.)
    • Do not block an aisle with your cart when shopping.
    • Don't "drive" a cart while talking on a cell phone.
    • Your cart is a vehicle. Use good "cart sense" and watch where you push it. Avoid fast U-turns.
    • Do not allow your child to sit or stand in the cart's basket. It is all too easy for an unrestrained child to stand up and fall over the side. If a child is too old for the seat, he or she should walk next to the parent.
    • Do not allow your child to hang on or "ride" the cart--carts can tip over easy.
