Alhambra Song

This song was written by Mr. F. W. Seibel--the result of a contest conducted by Community Sing in the latter part of 1931. Although never officially adopted, the song was considered Alhambra's own and for years was presented as the opening number of most musical entertainments. As late as 1942, the blind organist, Allen Spurr, played it on the pipe organ that used to be a feature of the Alhambra Theater.

Where the mountains everlasting
     Rear their heads into the sky,
Where a million blooms are casting
     Fragrant perfumes far and nigh;
Where the gentle ocean breezes
     Charge each wavelet with a smile,
Where each prospect lures and pleases,
     There's a home where life's worthwhile.
                                       Chorus
O' Alhambra, Fair Alhambra
     Many songs to thee we've sung,
'Mid your orange groves and flowers
     Life is ever fair and young.
In the shadows of the Sierras
     Lay the answer to our quest,
At the gateway to our valley,
     Fair Alhambra, we found rest.
Fairest city of the valley,
     Nestling in San Gabriel's vale;
When the shades of evening dally,
     And the sinking sun grows pale;
As the twinkling stars gleam nightly
     In the azure dome above,
E'en the dying day smiles brightly
     On the city of our love.
