• March 11, 2008
  "Tax Planning" Workshop - Noon at the Alhambra Public Library. Attendees will learn the benefits of tax planning vs. tax preparation; the formula for determining one's tax liability; current law changes; the most common tax mistakes made by most people; and the impact of taxes on investment-qualified plan distributions.   California State University, Los Angeles: Free tax preparation is offered from 10 a.m. to noon and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., at Cal State L.A., Salazar Hall, Room 363. Tax preparation is on a first-come, first-served basis. No appointments are accepted. The Cal State Department of Accounting in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, is offering help to people with an income of $40,000 or below. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program has a two-fold purpose: service and education for the community and service-learning for the students.   "Real Money - Real Estate/Refinancing" Workshop - Noon at the Alhambra Public Library. Attendees will learn how to sell a home in today's market; avoiding the ten biggest selling mistakes; smart investments every seller should know; how to invest in today's real estate market; basic strategies for buying rental properties; key questions when refinancing; finding the right loan for you; debt consolidation; and mortgage myths. • Joslyn Center, Alhambra: Free AARP Tax Preparation for seniors is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-4 p.m. at Joslyn Center, 211 N. Chapel Ave., Alhambra. E-filing is available and an appointment is required. The AARP Tax-Aide program offers free one-on-one counseling, as well as assistance on the telephone and internet to help individuals prepare basic tax forms, including the 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ and other standard schedules.   When necessary, arrangements can be made to assist shut-ins and homebound disabled persons to provide counseling at special sites, such as hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, etc. To request an AARP Tax-Aide volunteer to serve a special group of persons at a specific location contact taxaide@aarp.org.
